My 8 year old son and I read this book together at bedtime. At first, he didn't want to read it with me, because he said it's a "girl" book, but then he got into the story. We read the book in two nights. The first night we were going to stop right after Ellie and her sister entered the Cupcake World. I turned the page and was about to put the bookmark in, but there was an older gentleman in the picture, telling the girls something, and my son asked if we could read just one more page so he could find out who that man was. So, even though he said it was just for girls, he ended up liking it anyway. When I asked him what he thought about the book, he said, "I liked the food part."

I really like that the book is based on a verse from the Bible, Exodus 20:15 "Thou shalt not steal." It's important for kids to learn about Scriptures, and if they can learn about it through a fun and memorable book, that's even better. This book has stunningly beautiful illustrations! The pictures are so vibrant and colorful, and they really capture your attention. Ellie learns that she can have fun "when my chores and school work are finally done." I use that same philosophy at home - my kids have to finish all their homework before they're allowed to play or watch tv. Another thing I liked, is Ellie and her sister pray before they go to bed. The message of the story is very cute too - Ellie and her sister help the queen because she's feeling sad. Their adventure leads them to another sad person who stole the cupcake sprinkles. It ends with everyone getting to ride in the parade together, and they all end up happy. They learn that stealing isn't the answer, it's better to talk to others and work things out, because "doing the right thing is the sweetest treat of all."
